I don't understand why a festival has to have such a f*cking stupid name. I won't go there and give my money to people that seem to find it funny to call their festival "Funeral of a cat"!
i'll wait till the damn last minute if that one will really be the first one... if it's not, i won't go. I certainly won't go

I find it rather an amusing name *g*
But it has its history, and what i can say thanks to google is that the "cat" represents an unwanted school.
So its more a burial of a school... and we all love that, dont we?

It's easy, Queima das fitas is a university festival, like a festival which reason it's to celebrate the ending of the term, and for those who are in the last year, it has even more meaning. There are many Queima das fitas in Portugal, but the better ones are in Coimbra, Porto and Braga. Coimbra and Porto, the festival has the same name, Queima das Fitas, in Braga has a different name, Enterro da gata, but some people refer to any type of this festivals as the same, Queima das Fitas.
And Enterro da Gata means The funeral of the school insuccess

If this shit is true, I moght actually attend it!
My Flight leaves on 4.May and has a connection via Frankfurt - All I have to do is extend it in a week (or a little more)
It's gonna be quit expensive, but It's doable, just have to make sure it's happening.
And Pezi - you better be there!
My Babylon says that:
"The Queima das Fitas (Portuguese for Burning of the Ribbons) is a traditional festivity of the students of some Portuguese universities, organized originally by the students of the University of Coimbra"

"Queima das fitas" (sometimes with other names as "Enterro da Gata", ou just "Enterro"), are students parties, in various cities where there's a college or a university, that lasts for a entire week and it's generally made in big outdoor parks. Each year they bring two or three international names (that are not too much expensive to book), in order to bring some public there. But the vast majority of people who attend "Queima" are students that don't ever bother about what the bands are playing, as long as there's alchool (and believe me, there's ALWAYS alchool! lol). For example: the day that usually brings more people is the "cheesy day", where artists of questionable taste are playing. They just want to have fun, celebrate and get drunk.
If you are with too many expectations about this gig for being the first Guano Apes will play, just loose them. You might have fun, Guano Apes might give a good show, but it's not a concert aimed for the fans, at all.
Any questions, just ask.

Ah yes its like part of the series of shows they did back in 2002 which they called "Student Academic Festivals". I wonder if this will be the only one they do?!? (Lol now wouldnt that ruffle some feathers) |
You are right Simon. It's the same thing as when they played in 2002. Usually International bands play in at least 2 festivals (it's logistically more viable for the organisation).
This is actually a hard one for me as my contract in Budapest ends on May 9th ... I was thinking about returning on the 11th but now I have no idea what to do.

For those who are planning to attend to this one:
Closest Airport: Porto, Portugal (& then train to Braga - 2€)
Other Airports: http://vamosparaespanha.com.br/mapa_aeroportos_espanha.gif (all from Salamanca and up) + bus/train to Porto/Braga
Tickets: are prob 15€ or less (1 day)
Camping: No camping available
NOTE: International Bands usually play in 2 or more "Queimas" accross the country. GA might play in Porto or Coimbra (both before Braga) or might not play anywhere else.
You are advised to wait a few more days for some more confirmations.

I'll be there!
this year is the tenth anniversary of Paredes de Coura 99 where Guano Apes headlined the festival and stormed the place.
it inspired me to go to festivals and from that year on I went to lots of festivals in Portugal with the last one I've been being Oeiras Alive 2008.
Guano Apes performance that night was really awesome with 30 000 people jumping and singing the entire concert.
I really miss them and since I live in Braga and study at the University of Minho I can't afford to miss their comeback.
If anyone wants to come over here, I'm available to help with anything needed.
Hopefully I'll post pictures and videos of the concert.
Best Regards

guys
here's the hole truth, from a portuguese fan
In Portugal, almost at the end of the School year every university/ college has it's ou festival, which is tradionally called "Queima das Fitas" or "Burning of the Ribbons" in english... It started in Coimbra, the Oldest University in Portugal, and then started bo be held also by the new universities that were founded all over the country. Nevertheless, in Braga, in the mid 1800's there was a similar festivity, held by the high school students (there was no university there until the late 1970's) that was called "enterro da gata" ( funeral /burrial of the cat). The cat here does not represente the animal itself but the lack os sucsess in school. When the University was built in Braga, the festival passed it's name from "Queima das fitas" to "Enterro da gata" after a few years as a homage to the high school students that more than a century ago held the festivities, sometimes with great dificulty, against the government, for exemple...
To those who say that the students don't bother with the bands that go there, that is not true. In fact, last year we had some amazing concerts in Braga (James, for example) and the crowd was magnificent, it was full and averybody sang allong with the band. There is a lot, of alcohol, it's true, but people still enjoy the concerts and the real atack to the beer and other trully delicous alcoholic stuff only stars after the shows.
About the cheesy day, it's the day that brings more people because there is a parade before, in which everybody participates, so, once they're in town, they go to the shows. In that day, people really just go there for the boose, but in the other day you're able to year some really good band and really good music...
If you could get to Braga and watch the show i'm sure you would love. There is a great athmosphere, portuguese people are very nice, you'll watch great shows and have the time of you're life. You also would get to know a beatiful city.
So try to book a flight to oporto (there are many low-cos flights arriving there), then it's 2 € by train to braga and a suprisingly cheap 11/12€ ticket to the show (2 bands, and dj's after)
Also, if you're a university student bring you're card and you might be able to get a discount...

point 1. you could have easily just replied to the main topic.
point 2. this is a forum; if you want a reply, just read it on the board.
point 3. if you're gonna open a new topic, at least name it properly like "tickets for enterro da gata, pt"; "tickets" is totally random as the Apes are playing dozens of gigs.
now, replying to your question: you have to buy the ticket at the entrance. it will NOT sell out, no worries!
